Filthy Music Review - 'Krisiun: Forged in Fury'

Krisiun – Forged in Fury (2015)

Century Media

Review by Jude Felton

Brazilian death metal titans are one of those bands that, whilst certainly well known, and arguably Brazil’s most popular metal band after Sepultura, have never quite hit the metal world’s collective consciousness to the degree that I certainly feel they should. They are certainly magnificent workhorses of the genre, with the trio consistently releasing quality music over the past 20 years or so.

This August will see the Erik Rutan produced Forged in Fury hit stores worldwide, courtesy of Century Media, and it is relentless beast of an album.

Musically speaking Forged in Fury falls into the no-frills, no bullshit kind of death metal album, and therein lays its strengths and weaknesses. You aren’t going to get a tech-death extravaganza laid out with the aid of a 37 string bass, nor are you going to get a murky, recorded under a swamp whilst being suffocated slab of brutality. This is pure and simple good quality death metal that assaults you solidly for 52 minutes.

Now, to be honest, as a fan of lengthy albums 52 minutes of death metal, of this ilk, can be a stretch on the old attention span, and there are times when I felt a little tightening up here and there couldn’t have harmed things. However, there is more than enough quality on display here for me to forgive such minor irritations.

Death metal legend and producer extraordinaire has done the trick, once again, with regards to the production here, allowing each of the trio of brothers plenty of breathing space within the albums overall sound. Although, with that being said, it is the mighty and forever pummeling assault of the drums that really shine through; it’s a merciless attack throughout the album’s running time.

Overall, Forged in Fury is an album you are going to want to bang your head to. It might be a tad on the long side, but there is more than enough quality here to satisfy fans of old school death metal.

Forged in Fury, delivered with unrelenting venom.
